“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made the heaven and earth” Psalm 121:1-2

We all know the book of Psalms was written by King David. This verse says, “I lift up my eyes to the hill, from where does my help come?” I can imagine him gazing at the highest hill, wondering where does his help come from. He is asking a genuine question, “…from where does my help come from?”

The same question should still be asked today, where does our help come from?

Does our help come from the news, where we follow the statistics and what’s going to happen to our country? Does our help come from society whose rules always change the next season? Does our help come from Dr Google and other advice columns? Does our help come from the opinions of men and women? Or do we run to God when all else fails?

What we run to in our time of need ultimately reveals where we’ve placed our trust, hope and comfort. Sometimes we run to everyone and everything, before we run to God. Almost as if He’s our back-up plan.

I know for me in my journey, I had to learn to run to God rather than running to people. There is nothing wrong with asking friends who give wise counsel some advice on your situation. But when you constantly run to them it is a problem.

I used to do that a lot whenever I was struggling, I would run to my friends (amazing sisters in Christ) and let them know what was going on. And I thank God that they push me to Jesus because most of the time they will ask “Have you told God about this?” “Have you prayed to God about that?” or they would give me a verse to meditate on to remind me of God’s goodness and perfect timing!

The reason why Kind David was described as a man after God’s own heart, wasn’t because he was perfect but because he knew he had a perfect God. He realized his mistakes and would always run into God presence. Whenever he was attacked or wandered outside of God’s dwelling place, his immediate response was to get on his knees and pray.

David always went straight to his source, and I love how he answers his own question in the following verse,

Psalm 121:2
“My help comes from the Lord, who made the heaven and the earth”

He emphasizes the power of God when he explains, how He created the heaven and earth. The same God who made the heavens, will also make a way. The One who has always been faithful to him when he was unfaithful, will still continue to be faithful.

Another biblical character I admire is Hannah and her response to her situation. Hannah is barren and her husband marries a second wife, who can bear kids. She is ridiculed and mocked by the second wife and when all things become unbearable.

1 Samuel 1:9(a)
“After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord”

Hannah didn’t rant about her situation; she didn’t post a subliminal message about the second wife on social media. She didn’t look outside to find her own solution but went straight to the temple and brought her needs before God.  Just like David, she looked up.

Hannah knew where her help came from. God who created the heavens and earth, who formed her in her mother’s womb can do wonders in her own womb.

My prayer for you and me, is that we continually reflect on our walk with God. I hope after you have read this, you sit alone with God and ask yourself “where does my hope come from?” or ask the Lord, “Who, what and where, do I put so much of my faith in?”

I pray that no matter what goes on internally or on the outside – we continually look up to God because that is where our help should always come from,
